The Georgia State Board of Funeral Services is working with the Georgia Department of Revenue to inspect one of Augusta’s oldest funeral homes.
The state shut down Dent’s Undertaking Establishment earlier this week stating the business owed $142,000 in back taxes.
NBC Augusta uncovered this isn't the first time Dent's has been investigated by the licensing board that oversees it.
In September 2005, Dent's handled funeral arrangements for Maggie Dixon of Augusta.
According to documents obtained by NBC Augusta from the state board the total cost of her funeral was $2,350.
Dixon’s granddaughter, Tonya Hill, was in charge of her finances.
Hill used a $4,000 annuity to pay the funeral home four moths after the services.
"They told me it would probably be best to sign over an annuity and put it in their name," said Hill.
And Hill says that’s what she did.
"They used the annuity, they filed for it and they said they were going to reimburse me and I asked them to put it in writing,” she said.
But Hill says a funeral home employee told her a written contract wasn't necessary and she would be reimbursed $1,600...money left over in the annuity after the funeral expenses were paid.
"It took a very long time for them to be responsible to return the money; they just gave me the run around, said Hill.
After months of writing letters to Georgia’s attorney general and going back and forth with the funeral home, the state board took action.
They found Dent's in fault and fined them $500 and ordered them to reimburse Hill.
It was a process that took six months from the time she signed over the annuity.
NBC Augusta called Dent's and told them about the information we found out.
We left a message for the owner, but he has not returned our call.

I'm hoping this stuff about this funeral doesn't just go away. There are so many preneeds that need to be addresses. Were the insured to sell preneeds. Was there a trust account set up for the preneeds? Who actually had a license to run the funeral home? According to documents someone's license were revoked
