Road construction ahead – it seems those signs are everywhere you drive these days in Augusta. You’ll be happy to know the end is in sight for parts of the project.
If you've tried to make your way to Sam's or Wal-Mart on Bobby Jones Expressway, you've seen one of these construction areas.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is working on a new bridge that will carry Bobby Jones over Scott Nixon Road.
Kyle Baxley, with the Georgia Department of Transportation, said, "When we get more growth, more shopping, more residential, more people driving, we have to expand the interstate to help these people move through."
But the traffic jams won't last long.
DOT is expected to have that part of the project completed by Thanksgiving.
"We did mention that we will be closing the Davis Road ramps by the end of the month in early September. We have to do that to finish making new ramps and they too will be finished by Thanksgiving," said Baxley.
In the meantime, drivers will have to use the I-520 exit ramps both east and westbound. Basically, they're reversing the detour.
Now on to I-20...
"We will be doing additional shifting of traffic on the eastbound and westbound as early as next week," said Baxley.
That may cause some delays for travelers not only because of the narrowing of the road, but also the speed limit will be dropped to 45 mph for safety.
The Georgia Department of Transportation will also be working on Marks Church Road but that is an overnight project and should not affect many drivers.
Parts of the project will be completed in a few months. The whole project will be finished by August, 2010.
