Jefferson Police Department searched by GBI

By NBCAugusta Reporters

JEFFERSON, Ga. (AP) - Georgia Bureau of Investigation auditors
found that evidence unaccounted for in Jefferson Police
Department's evidence room was missing because of lack of
organization, not criminal activity.
Police Chief Joe Wirthman ordered an audit of the evidence room
after the city hired him in September 2006.
Wirthman decided in December that the mess in the evidence room
required a trained evidence clerk.
The new technician, Amber Mathewson, spent more than five months
cataloging the evidence and found several items missing, a softball
bat, three guns, about $371 in cash, drugs, rented movies and a
counterfeit $20 bill.
All the items except the movies and the $20 bill were accounted
for later.
District Attorney Richard Bridgeman asked GBI auditors in June
to conduct a review to ensure nothing illegal had happened.
