Coliseum Authority votes to keep paying member's legal bills

By Ashley Campbell acampbell@nbcaugusta.com

Taxpayers could be paying more legal bills for an Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority member.

Authority member William Fennoy is charged with simple battery from a fight he had with community activist, Woody Merry in May.

On Tuesday members voted four to two to continue paying Fennoy's attorney fees.

The Authority has already approved spending $3,000 in legal bills. Chairman, Richard Isdell tells NBC Augusta he's called a special meeting with Fennoy's attorney to find out how much more the board could have to pay.

Merry accuses Fennoy of punching him in the face and kicking him on the ground during the fight. Fennoy says it was self defense.

A judge formally charged both men with simple battery in July. Both will have a jury trial.
