AUGUSTA, Ga. - Richmond County's superintendent of schools has a plan to improve things at one of the district's most troubled schools.

Dana Bedden is recommending a new principal for Butler High School to get a better grip on academic and disciplinary problems.

He says his recommendation is for a man who has experience and the ability to help turn Butler around.

Bedden also has a strong message for students, teachers and the community.

"If something is not going the way it's supposed to, I'll tell them directly. I had one of those conversations with Dr. Reeves," Bedden said.

He also had a conversation with his choice for Walter Reeves’ replacement, Greg Thompson.

"Some of you may not recognize that name," Bedden said.

Whether you know him or not Bedden says things need to change at Butler High School and he thinks Thompson can make those changes.

"A big part of the decision was someone who had experience at high school level" Bedden said.

Thompson has more than eight years of experience in high schools. He served as assistant principal at North Augusta High School for four years. He was principal at Strom Thurmond High School for four years. He is currently the assistant principal at T.W. Josey High School.

Thompson says he knows the challenges that await him.

"To change the mindset of the kids in the atmosphere of the school," Thompson said.

Bedden says mindsets won't be the only thing changing. He says several staff members are not doing their jobs.

"This will not be a place to stay around collect a paycheck and buy time till you retire. Those days are over," he said.

As for those Butler fights Bedden says one of the main causes of those disruptions will no longer exist.

"Let’s go on notice. No trespassing at Butler. If you're not a student it will no longer be a comfortable environment. You will be arrested on the spot," Bedden said.

Wayne Frazier, the principal of Tubman Middle School, was also being considered as Reeves’ replacement. Bedden says several people in the community asked for that not to happen because he’s made so many positive changes at Tubman.

Bedden is also recommending Butler's current principal, Walter Reeves be transferred as principal of Hephzibah High School, where the current principal there is retiring.

The board of education will vote on Bedden's recommendations Wednesday. These changes would take effect October 1 approved.

The problem is not the principal at Butler, it is the security. How do people from other schools get into Butler? If we had better security, that big fight would not have happened. Dr. Reeves is a great principal and person.
