AUGUSTA, Ga. - In six weeks voters will elect a new President of the United States.

If you're planning to be one of those voters, there's some important information you need to know.

Just because you once registered to vote doesn't mean you're still on the list of voters.

Lynn Bailey, Executive Director of the Richmond County Board of Elections tells NBC Augusta if it has been several years since you've voted or had any contact with the board of elections your name could be removed from the list of registered voters.

This could affect people who haven't voted since 2000.

"I would still check myself because polling places change, things happen and that could affect your residency and status so if it's been a number of years since you've voted, you need to confirm your status," said Bailey.

To find out if you’re registered to vote in the November 4 election, check with your county's board of elections. If you're not registered you need to contact your board of elections to re-register.

The deadline for registering to vote in Georgia is October 6 and in South Carolina it’s October 4.
