AUGUSTA, Ga. - America's war heroes are returning from their latest tour, but this wasn't a tour of duty. It was to Washington D.C., to visit the memorials of their fallen brothers.
Dozens of veterans from Georgia-Carolina returned home Sunday night. They traveled thousands of miles to view the nation's war memorials.
Veteran Charlie Sidener has served in not one, but three wars. From World War II, to the Korean War, and two tours in Vietnam.
This weekend, for the first time, he got to see the monuments dedicated to the efforts of him and the hundreds of thousands of other soldiers who served their country.
"I signed up for this and finally got elected this time,” says Sidener. “The feelings you get, it's like an emotional roller coaster that's been locked inside you for all these years. They really came out for a lot of us.”
The free trip was organized by Vets to Washington, a local group that's sent veterans and their families to see famous war memorials for eight years.
World War II vet, Calvin Jones brought his grandson along with him on the trip. They saw a lot of the memorials, but his favorite…
“Raising the Flag at Iwo Jima. That was one of my number one.”
Vietnam veteran, Ron Bennett, had a close connection with the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial wall.
“Some of my friends died and I was able to find them on the wall,” says Bennett.
“You realize this is a part of history that helped keep the world free and that you were a part of it,” says Sidener.
“When we boarded that bus this Friday morning, we were all strangers. We came back home as family,” says Bennett.
A family bound together by their experiences at war.
