Sen. Chambliss says he would have supported bailout plan, given the chance to vote

ATLANTA (AP) - Republican U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss blamed what he
called "a failure of Democratic leadership'' for the defeat of a
sweeping financial bailout bill on Capitol Hill.

Speaking to reporters in Atlanta Tuesday, Chambliss said he would have voted for the recovery proposal. He said it contained safeguards for taxpayers that the initial plan did not.

The House rejected the plan 228-205 Monday, with Democrats and
Republicans voting against it.

Chambliss also said the Bush Administration fumbled the plan's rollout, scaring voters with a high $700 billion price tag and labeling it a Wall Street bailout.

Chambliss is up for re-election next month. He faces Democrat
Jim Martin.
