Writers fired by Perry plan to picket gala

ATLANTA (AP) - Guests at the star-studded gala for the Saturday
grand opening of Tyler Perry's new TV and film compound in Atlanta
could be greeted with picket signs.

The Writers Guild of America, West, plans to set up picket lines
outside the multimillion-dollar studio this weekend because Perry
fired four writers from his TV show ``House of Payne'' earlier this
week. The guild says that the writers were fired because of their
union activities.

The guild has filed an unfair labor practice complaint against
Perry with the National Labor Relations Board.

Perry's attorney, Matt Johnson, said the four were fired
``because of the quality of their work.''

The Saturday gala is expected to have a celebrity lineup that
includes Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith, Sidney Poitier and Usher.
