AUGUSTA, Ga. - There are 25 days until we elect a new President of the United States. Local officials are calling this an historic election, and early voting records have already been set. With an expected record number of first time voters, there also comes much uncertainty about what to expect at the polls
Many voters tell NBC Augusta several rumors have been circulating about what they should anticipate at the polls.
“We heard rumors about you can't wear certain hats like saying Obama or McCain,” Valerie Lindsey said.
Lindsey is referring to a rumor that says if voters wear clothes to the polls that promote a candidate they will be turned.
“The idea that someone wearing a t-shirt into a polling place won't allow them to cast a ballot is really quite absurd,” Lynn Bailey said.
Bailey is the director for the Richmond County Board of Elections. She says you won't be turned away if you wear any campaign gear but voters will be asked to cover up due to a state rule that restricts campaigning within 150 ft. of a polling place.
“If it's a button we'll ask them to take it off, if it’s a hat will ask them to take it off. If it's a shirt we'll ask to cover it up or put a jacket on,” the board of elections director said.
With record numbers of voters expected to turn out on Election Day another rumor is that polls will not be able to handle the crowds. Although Bailey says lines will be very long, she assures voters the polls are equipped to handle the numbers.
“They can expect to see more poll workers and more voting equipment than they normally see to accommodate these crowds,” Bailey said.
Another rumor is that people whose homes have been foreclosed will not be allowed to vote. Bailey says voters should not worry about this one.
“You can be temporarily removed from your address and still be eligible to vote,” Bailey said.
What about felons? Do they lose their right to vote forever?
Once a person has completed their sentence they are automatically restored their right to vote.
Most of all Bailey says be prepared. Know your polling place, make sure you're registered and get a sample ballot before hand. Keys to a low stress November 4th.
“There is so much passion coming from both sides. This is such a historic election in so many different ways,” Bailey said.
November 4th is Election Day, but Bailey encourages early voting. The Richmond County Board of Elections is holding early voting at the Municipal building in Downtown Augusta from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Early voting lasts until October 24th. In South Carolina you can vote early by absentee ballot but you must have a reason that qualifies.
