Atlanta homeless shelter may have water turned off

ATLANTA (AP) - One of Atlanta's largest homeless shelters faces
having its water service cut off unless it starts paying off
$160,000 in back bills.

The Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless runs a shelter
housing upward of 700 people a night at Peachtree and Pine streets,
downtown. Director Anita Beaty says the shelter had been
negotiating the outstanding water bill with the city when officials
suddenly cut its service Tuesday.

Shelter officials obtained an emergency court injunction to keep
the water. Superior Court Judge T. Jackson Bedford gave the task
force until Friday to pay $6,000 of the bill.

Beaty says the shelter is considering emergency water trucks and
portable toilets to remain open.
