Human rights advocates have hopes for Obama
ATLANTA (AP) - Human rights activists from around the world are expressing hopes that President-elect Obama will restore the U.S. lead toward achieving their international goals. The Carter Center in Atlanta is hosting a conference aimed at focusing support for international political, economic, social and cultural rights in the new administration. Former President Carter told about 50 conference delegates Tuesday that the U.S. image has been tarnished over the past seven years in the name of fighting terrorism. Carter said he believes the Obama administration "will be looking to restore the reputation of my country.'' Navi Pillay, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the challenge "involves worldwide U.S. participation.'' (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
