Augusta Public Transit asks for public input on changing bus routes

By Tina Terry tterry@nbcaugusta.com

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta Public Transit wants to find out how it can better serve you.

It's paying a consulting company $133,000 to help study how to increase efficiency and ridership.

The department wants to know if current bus routes are outdated and if there are other places people would rather have the buses go.

The study should be complete next year. To share your ideas call Augusta Public Transit at 706-821-1721. You can also e-mail your ideas to Public Transit Director Heyward Johnson at hjohnson@augustaga.gov.

1. Bus Schedules should be more accessible - in hard copy at the main station and primary bus stops. 2. Bus stop at the mall is not clearly marked. 3. Bus schedule for the mall should be expanded with earlier and later runs and weekend runs. 4. More advertisements on side and inside bus to off-set costs. 5. Market how clean, safe, reliable and professional the service. In addition, the city is going "green" and saving our environment if more use the bus. 6. Weekend route for Ft. Gordon.

1. They should first try to make the routes they have user friendly. 2. Next they should make the transit workers just plain friendly. 3. How about routes from Ft gordon to the mall, 4. Add routes from Tmobile/ ADP/ KNOLOGY for lunch to Robert C daniel and back from 12:00 - 1:00, 5. more park and ride initiatives 6. Hire an AUGUSTA firm to handle signage 7. give an ASU marketing class 30,000.00 instead of an outside survey team and charge them with developing a marketing plan for the bus

I think we need to have more bus routes and for the Lumpkin Road bus to run a little long and also on Saturdays. I have to find a way to do my shopping and also find a way home from K-mart to Richmond Hill Road after 5:30p.m Sometimes I do not get off until around 6:00. We need to keep service up and running. I will pay whatever fare it may take.

I had a hard time finding information about the routes, even the information online is general. It's hard to use this system if you are new to it. They need to reform the way they operate.

Well, I think APT officials should be forced to try to get around Augusta for a week only on busses. That ought to answer their questions quick enough.
