AUGUSTA, Ga. – A former Spirit Creek Middle School teacher and public safety officer are accused of having sex on the job during the 2007-2008 school year.
Richmond County Superintendent Dana Bedden addressed the sex scandal during a news conference Monday afternoon.
Bedden says the district first learned about the allegations from 7th grade teacher Denise Ogden earlier this school year. He says Ogden was involved in a love triangle and sent the school system two emails – one that alerted school leaders about the accusations and a second that allegedly showed the underwear of one of those allegedly involved.
Ogden is accused of having a relationship with public safety officer Ronnie Collins. Bedden said sex was taking place inside the Public Safety office.
Former Spirit Creek principal Sharon McAlevy is also accused in the investigation.
Bedden brought in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to conduct polygraphs to help find the truth.
"What was uncomfortable in this situation was trying to find out who was telling the truth and who was not. It was important to be fair but hold people accountable at the same time,” said Bedden.
Collins resigned before this investigation started. He went on to work for the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, but was later fired for lying on his application.
McAlevy and Ogden both resigned from Richmond County schools. Bedden says neither will be eligible for rehire.
Bedden says a full report from the Richmond County Board of Education will be available next week.
Bedden says he will turn the school system's investigation over to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission who will determine if the teachers involved will be able to keep their licenses.
