AUGUSTA, Ga.- Dozens of business owners say they've been taken for hundreds of dollars.
NBC Augusta 26 News has just learned the man who they say scammed them is being investigated by the Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
Duke Martin says he's a reputable business owner, distributing military discount booklets to Fort Gordon and other bases around the country.
According to people we talked to, he's not delivering what he promised.
βTo take people like this...I just don't know," said one woman who says Martin scammed her.
She's one of at least ten business owners who say they've been ripped off by Martin.
Martin claims he works for a military publications discount magazine company, known as Mil Pub Inc.
Martin says the company mails discount booklets to new families at Fort Gordon and other military bases and solicits businesses to advertise in the booklets.
The business owners NBC Augusta 26 News talked to say Martin charged them hundreds of dollars to advertise, but those booklets were never printed.
"I paid him a nice little bit and I never did see anything-no advertising, booklets...nothing. I contacted Fort Gordon, they've never heard of him,β said one woman.
Cay Hickey says her husband's dental office fell victim to Martin too.
"He told me he'd be back within the week with the finished product and copies of the booklet...never heard from him again,β said Hickey.
Then one day she says Martin came back to the office to get a tooth removed.
βI was sitting in my office and I saw him and said I need to talk to you and he told the receptionist, I'll be right back, I have to go get my checkbook to pay for the tooth and we haven't seen him since," said Hickey.
NBC Augusta went to Martin's office on Windsor Spring Road, but the sign on the business says Crazy Leggs Barber Shop.
Martin refused to speak on camera.
A spokesperson with Fort Gordon told me they have no idea who Duke Martin is and have not done any business with him.
NBC Augusta also spoke with a business owner in Columbia who says the same thing happened to them.
We tried to reach the corporate office in Nevada for Martins' company with the address we were given. We found a hair salon is at that location.
We'll continue to follow this investigation and bring you the latest as we get it.
