AUGUSTA, Ga. – Food companies and retailers have been recalling products with peanut butter in them because of suspicion of contamination.

A salmonella outbreak has killed at least six people and sickened more than 470 others in 43 states. At least 90 people have been hospitalized.

Officials with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration say most peanut butter sold in jars at supermarkets appears to be safe, but the recall has many people taking precautions.

"We haven't been eating a lot of peanut butter because of that," said shopper Shannon Doolittle.

Doolittle, like many others, is feeling scared about a recent peanut butter recall.

"Honestly, I'm not letting my child eat it just to be safe," said shopper Chi Reece.

NBC Augusta 26 News contacted managers at two grocery stores who are pulling products containing peanut butter or peanut paste from their shelves.

A spokesperson from Publix says they're removing Keebler crackers and Little Debbie snack crackers.

Kroger is telling a similar story.

"We have pulled the Little Debbie cheese and peanut butter crackers and the toasty peanut butter crackers," said Ida Butler, Kroger, Unit Manager.

26 News talked with several other store managers in the area who say they aren't a part of the recalls.

"If they're not pulling the product, it's because they don't have the product in the store. All Kroger stores are told immediately to pull the product off the shelves," said Butler.

Publix has the same policy.
