MILLEN, Ga. - New numbers reveal more and more people in Georgia and the CSRA are losing their jobs.
The Georgia Department of Labor reports that unemployment in the CSRA is nearly ten percent. The state unemployment rate is at a record high of 9.3%. Jenkins County has the highest unemployment rate in the state at 21%.
Today NBC Augusta 26 News' went to the town of Millen to see how people in Jenkins County are doing.
About five years ago, business in Jenkins County and the city of Millen was booming.
“We had one of the best unemployment rates in the state of Georgia and you could get a job here if you wanted one,” King Rocker said.
But today things are a lot different.
“There's no jobs available. Every business has cut back as far as employees,” said Linda Johnson, who owns a business in Millen.
“Now there's nothing no where,” Millen resident, Mary Kirkland, said.
“It's terrible. I'm in the school system. Other than that, I wouldn't have a job,” Mirian Johnson said.
Millen's economic downturn is mainly a result of several factories closing, most notably Jockey International and most recently Metal Industries. Now the city's mayor is working to bring industry back.
“Some weeks we'll spend 10-15 hours a piece just following leads. We apply for every grant, anything we think we'll help,” Rocker said.
But King Rocker says nothing has turned up despite the city's efforts.
“We need some help from the state and federal government to stimulate our economy,” Rocker said.
Millen is a town of about 3500 people. Last year, 300 to 400 jobs were lost, leaving people with little to turn to.
“More than anything we're crying out to God and saying we need a miracle,” Pastor Steven Adams said.
“I'm just praying. That's all I can say,” Johnson said.
People out of work are also hitting the books at the Jenkins County Center of Swainsboro Technical College.
“We have had an increase in enrollment 20%,” Elaine Williams said.
All the while, Rocker says he will continue to search for answers.
“One good industry would mean an awful lot to this community and we just keep our fingers crossed,” Rocker said.
The mayor also said, the factories closing have had a negative effect on other industries like hospitals and banks.
