AUGUSTA, Ga. - There was bumper to bumper traffic as far as the eye can see around the Augusta National on Wednesday.
Congestion went all the way to the Washington Road exit on I-20.
You may be wondering how Augusta-Richmond County's Traffic and Engineering Department is managing it all.
The central hub for all things traffic related in Augusta is in one room at Westside High School.
It’s where the county's traffic division works nonstop, updating information and getting it to you as soon as possible, starting with news from the sky.
"The state highway patrol has the helicopter flying out and they're identifying where the backups are," said Steven Cassell with the Richmond County Traffic and Engineering Department.
Once the department gets that information..."We try to address them through here by adjusting the signal timings on the ramps," said Cassell.
That’s done on computers in house.
Have you ever had the feeling you're being watched? You could be.
"We've got cameras at several intersections on Washington Road," said Cassell.
There are two cameras monitoring traffic on Berckmans Road and Stanley Drive. That is how traffic and engineering is noticing its main problem.
"We're finding a lot of left turners on Berckmans Road where there's no parking access down there," said Cassell.
The department then keeps in touch with the media.
"We're updating that information so that they can get it out and help people make better decisions," said Cassell.
Better decisions on the road will make your trip and others a bit easier.
