MARTINEZ, Ga. - A vehicle repossession turned deadly.
Now a repo man and his wife are on the run and wanted for the murder of an Augusta man.
Investigators say the couple sped off after hitting a man while trying to repossess his friend's truck.
NBC Augusta 26 News spoke with the man whose car was being repossessed and watched his best friend of twenty years fight for his life.
The man says he volunteered to give his truck back to his lender, but calls his friend's death a pointless and horrific act and it's something the Columbia County Sheriff's Office says is a first for them.
Scratches and dents on his Dodge truck help tell the story of a repossession that was anything but routine.
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, called his lender to have his vehicle voluntarily repossessed.
Last Thursday, Columbia County investigators say a repo man - Michael Brown - and his wife Victoria came to repossess the truck -- one day earlier than scheduled.
"As the reposessor was attempting to leave with the truck, he was causing damage to Mr. Jacob's vehicle, it was a van," said Captain Steve Morris with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
When the man arrived home on Roswell Drive in Martinez along with his friend William Jacobs he found his vehicle being repossessed, but that wasn't all.
"I stopped in the middle of the road and threw my hands up and said 'stop' you're hitting the van," said the man.
He says the couple kept trying to leave with his truck in tow.
"When the truck came forward, he hit me. I was able to push off and get out of the way," said the man.
His friend of 20 years, William Jacobs, wasn't as lucky.
"They went diagonally across my front yard and I saw Bill falling and I saw the guy turn and he ran over him...and he never slowed down," said the man.
Jacobs was taken to the hospital, where he died.
Now the couple who hit and killed him is on the run and wanted for murder.
Columbia County investigators are working with the repo company, Renaissance Recovery and SLED to help find Michael and Victoria Brown.
The couple is from Lexington County.
