MARTINEZ, Ga. - A vehicle repossession turned deadly.

Now a repo man and his wife are on the run and wanted for the murder of an Augusta man.

Investigators say the couple sped off after hitting a man while trying to repossess his friend's truck.

NBC Augusta 26 News spoke with the man whose car was being repossessed and watched his best friend of twenty years fight for his life.

The man says he volunteered to give his truck back to his lender, but calls his friend's death a pointless and horrific act and it's something the Columbia County Sheriff's Office says is a first for them.

Scratches and dents on his Dodge truck help tell the story of a repossession that was anything but routine.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, called his lender to have his vehicle voluntarily repossessed.

Last Thursday, Columbia County investigators say a repo man - Michael Brown - and his wife Victoria came to repossess the truck -- one day earlier than scheduled.

"As the reposessor was attempting to leave with the truck, he was causing damage to Mr. Jacob's vehicle, it was a van," said Captain Steve Morris with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

When the man arrived home on Roswell Drive in Martinez along with his friend William Jacobs he found his vehicle being repossessed, but that wasn't all.

"I stopped in the middle of the road and threw my hands up and said 'stop' you're hitting the van," said the man.

He says the couple kept trying to leave with his truck in tow.

"When the truck came forward, he hit me. I was able to push off and get out of the way," said the man.

His friend of 20 years, William Jacobs, wasn't as lucky.

"They went diagonally across my front yard and I saw Bill falling and I saw the guy turn and he ran over him...and he never slowed down," said the man.

Jacobs was taken to the hospital, where he died.

Now the couple who hit and killed him is on the run and wanted for murder.

Columbia County investigators are working with the repo company, Renaissance Recovery and SLED to help find Michael and Victoria Brown.

The couple is from Lexington County.

If you have any information, call the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

"LANDONS UNCLE" Victoria had to crawl after your brother to pay what he was supposed to and then If I was her I wouldnt let him see his son either since he's on DRUGS and an ALCOHOLIC. Victoria has never done anything but support that child his WHOLE life and gave him everything. Yeah, she got caught up with this Brown guy and got in trouble but she is a great mother, and your brother on the other hand is a sorry excuse for a guy so dont try to defend him just because this happened.

You can't have your cake and eat it too.How could I notify anyone of anything? I wouldn't know your brother or you or your parents if you walked up and asked me the time of day. If you and your family cared about Landon, truly cared, you would have put forth the smallest bit of effort to see him...

That would at least be a little more impressive. You claim thta your brother is a loving father, your parents are wonderful grandparents, and you the loving uncle...HMMM. I am willing to bet that the voluntary nature of the repo was not told to the repo agent. It amazes me how often I have to sneak around to steal a repo only to find that it was supposed to be voluntary. The clients are setting us up with bad info and they don't care about anything but picking up the unit. However, there is no excuse for being reckless, if the article is true as written the repo man is guilty.

I am Landon's uncle. my email is celticdruid13 at hotmail dot com. I am not a coward that hides behind the anonymity of the net. My family is appalled at the indignation of Victoria's behavior since the child was born. My brother loves his son, pays his child support, my parents also give, only to be slandered by her. We hear all of the lies she utters. Also, my family supported the Brown family when they were in dire straits. And Brown slanders us as well. Welcome home to the roost, chickens

This is Landon's Uncle. Perhaps before you sing the praises of Mia you might want to consider the fact that she has willfully hidden the child from the father's family. She also knew where fugitives were. We did not even know this event had happened until yesterday. Victoria refuses contact with my family unless she wants money, but refuses to let us have any thing to do with the kid. In my opinion, Mia is willfully involved in kidnapping by not notifying the father that the mother was away

the people who knew where this couple was (MIA for example who is Victoria's aunt) should be held accountable for their part in this as well. This man did just what he meant to do with no reguard for who was hurt and his wife knew what she was involved with because one of the aggrevated assault charges was when he beat her up. Mia is hoping to get custody of Victoria's child from this whole deal. Remember there is other people involved here. and God be with the families of the involved.

"Reposession" should ONLY take place as a result of a court order" Funny you should say that. Louisiana just went through that. It seems that the court process and attorneys fees were so expensive that banks would not write car loans to anyone that did not have great credit. It became so difficult to get a loan that many associations and organizations got together and petitioned the state to change the repo method to a self help method which is what we have here in Ga and SC. Legal cost!!!

The whole reposession process needs to be overhauled. "Reposession" should ONLY take place as a result of a court order - and the owner should be REQUIRED to personally return the vehicle (or whatever) to the local law enforcement authorities - and if the owner fails to do so in a specified time - he/she should be subject to arrest for contempt with a significant fine and/or jail time.

So we are supposed to believe that there was a gun and physical violence, a man pulling his wife out of one side of the truck while another man was hanging onto the other side of the truck. And this repoman took the time to unhook the repo from his dually? If these so called violent people were SO violent, why didn't he haul buggy with the repo still attached and get out of dodge? Why, cause that is NOT what happened per witnesses. The repo is still sitting in the yard where he dropped and fled!

I am certified, joined one of the 3 associations and they do background checks, driving record, office and lots check. I have insurance for a million and I am bonded although there has never been a bond that paid off in repo history. Only the owner of the copmpany is issued the million dollar bond, no employees. It's not worth the paper it's written on but banks don't know any better. When a lender hires me, they know that I have been checked out. Forwarders don't do that, they hire cheapest

The banks ARE responsible for the actions of their independent contractors see UCC comment 3 to 9-609. This code applies to all security enforcers (repo agents) and the lenders who hire them. Granted, some banks do hire only certified, insured, bonded members of trade associations. MOST lenders do not! MOST lenders hire whoever is least expensive that has insurance. Guess what folks, Renaisance/Renovo/AscentionHAS insurance but they DO NOT hire ONLY certified agents or do background checks.

The banks are not to blame. We hire certified people and require lic, bond, and insurance. You can't hold banks responsible for the repo companies actions. We just do our jobs as a lender. We do have heart. However, you can't control others actions. This guy - if all allegations are true - had issues before this happened. I do feel for the family of the victim.

An Assention Recovery agent (another forwarder/broker owned by Renovo and Renaissance)shot and killed a debtor in Alabama last year http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29427734/. These forwarding companys are a real problem to the repo world. A professional recovery company will be a member of a major recovery trade association and be nationally certified. These brokers hire the cheapest! It has been determined in court that lienholders are responsible for what the agents they hire do, SUE THEM HARD!

Who was the bank? They are responsible for the actions of whoever they hire. They should only be hiring a nationally certified agent that has been educated in the repossession process. Some lenders will ONLY hire certified repo agents, some will only hire members of national repo trade groups. This lender hired a forwarder who owns two other forwarding cos. and they use the cheapest sub contract agent they can find if they dont have their own employee in an area. This guy's their employee!

Lets ask those banks or finance companys why they give out out private information to just any old criminal. Those repo orders have peoples home address, phone #, SS#, Date of Birth, loan #, sometimes references names addresses and ph #) any of this info could be used to commit idenity theft and the lenders don't hire agents who have had background checks? WTF is up with that? Again, it's all about them saving money and they got what they paid for. Greed is to blame for this senseless death.
