AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Laney Walker community is one of the oldest areas in Augusta. Now nearly two dozen houses are getting makeovers thanks to a group of volunteers called "World Changers."
With more than 300 energetic and enthusiastic volunteers, the World Changers are doing just as their name would suggest.
All week, they're bringing change to some of Augusta's neediest. The group is providing much needed repairs for people who can't afford them.
World Changers is a religious organization that's been helping out the poor and needy across the country since 1990.
"They come from all over the Southeast,” says their project coordinator, Robert Austin. “We got groups from as far away as Little Rock, Arkansas and Indiana."
The mostly teenage volunteers can do some pretty difficult work; they hang out on roof tops, patching up leaks and installing new shingles. They are even giving homes a facelift with new paint. The work is no simple task, especially when the teens are two stories off the ground.
"You're slipping and sliding everywhere. You bring your old shoes to World Changers, so your traction is basically completely gone. It's kinda dangerous, but we're up for it," says Jack Santina, a 15-year-old volunteer from Florida.
The hard work and repairs made by volunteers are something the homeowners receiving them really appreciate.
"It's wonderful that they give up their summer to come and help the elderly and fix up some of the homes in the community,” says Laney Walker homeowner Jessie Gracy. The World Changers are fixing her roof and painting the outside of her home a bright white. “We've been trying to keep [the neighborhood] up, but you know how money is tight. We are so blessed to have the [World Changers] help us elderly."
"This is absolutely a worthy cause,” says Santina. “Spreading God's love and building houses for people who can't afford them is definitely a worthy cause."
"I just learn so much, learning about myself and helping others,” says Alex Logan. He’s been volunteering with World Changers for five years. “We do so much, but it also does so much for our hearts, too."
The volunteers, for all of their hard work, actually have to pay out of their own pockets to come to Augusta and do service for the less fortunate.
