ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Police say a major fire has erupted at the
Georgia Theatre, an Athens landmark and center of the local music
scene.

Witnesses said the fire, which began around 7 a.m. Friday, was a
major blaze and that the theater would likely suffer major damage.

The Georgia Theatre is a converted cinema that has served as a
music venue for many Athens bands, including REM and the B-52s.

Former Athens Mayor Doc Eldridge said he saw a huge plume of
black smoke when he arrived at his nearby office at 7:10 a.m.

The Athens Police Department is asking citizens to stay out of
the downtown business district until the fire is contained.
