AUGUSTA, Ga. - The former Richmond County deputy recently found not guilty of child molestation charges died in a car accident Sunday morning.
The Richmond County coroner tells NBC Augusta 26 News Lindon Haworth, Jr., died from blunt force trauma to the head.
Deputies on the scene say Haworth was driving on Highway 56 towards Augusta when his car veered into the left hand lane. That's when he side swiped another car. Haworth lost control and his car crashed into a culvert on the side of the road.
The driver of the other car also lost control and crashed into a fence.
That driver was taken to MCGHealth but we're told their injuries are not life threatening.
Highway 56 was blocked for more than three hours while emergency crews worked to clear the accident.
Haworth was found not guilty of molesting his 14-year-old neighbor earlier this month. 26 News was the only station to speak with him after the ruling come out.
Haworth was an Iraq war veteran and had received several honors, including a Purple Heart.
