AUGUSTA, Ga. - A new law is the subject of this Good Question from Marvin in Augusta. He wants to know if Georgia's "super speeder" law takes effect Wednesday.

The answer is yes and no. Starting July 1, the cost to reinstate your suspended license is going to increase. But, higher fines for speeders won't go into effect until January 2010.

If you have the need for speed, it’s a habit that’s going to cost you. In fact, starting in 2010, it will set you back another $200 on top of your original ticket.

“What that $200 does is offset the cost of the trauma center from speeding related accidents,” said Cpl. Mark Chestang, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

In 2007, traffic accidents caused more than 1600 deaths on Georgia roadways, costing trauma centers $7.8 billion a year. It's estimated, fines from the super speeder law will raise nearly $30 million that will go directly to trauma centers.

So if you're going more than 85 mph anywhere in Georgia or more than 75 mph on two lane roads, expect to pay an extra $200. It's a fine deputies say can easily be avoided.

“Driving is a privilege not a right. People are upset. But you control your car. So if you don't speed, you have nothing to worry about,” said Cpl. Chestang.

To get your license reinstated after it's been suspended or revoked, it could cost at least $200 depending on the offense.

Agreed, Jomo. Not really that surprising when you take one of the worst educated states and then have little to no requirements to get your license. Let's crack down on hand held cell use first. Fast drivers don't cause accidents - bad drivers do.

How about redirecting some of that money towards a compulsory driver awareness program for new applicants? In the 4 years I've been in GA I've been nearly sideswiped 4 times, rear ended twice and backed into once, all below the speed limit.
