GQ: Why is Richmond County starting school on a Friday

By Navideh Forghani nforghani@nbcaugusta.com

AUGUSTA, Ga. - In exactly one month, students from Richmond County will head back to school. The August 7 start is the subject of this Good Question.

Mike from Augusta wants to know why students are heading back to class on a Friday?

26 News spoke with board members who say the date coincides with the last day of school, which is May 21, 2010.

Because state law requires 180 days of school, members say that means classes must begin Friday, August 7.

Last year, Richmond County students went back to class on a Thursday.

They should wait until the beginning of September. August is too hot.

Thank you, Lil, for pointing out that they did start on a Monday last year. It was the first year since my children started public school that school did not start on a Thursday. And now we are starting on Friday. geesh.

I agree with the person that said that students shouldn't return until September. As a matter of fact, when I was in school, we didn't return to school until afer labor day. By the way, why does school end in May? What happened to school ending in June?
