AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Richmond County Sheriff's Office has identified a body found near the Boat House off of Riverfront Drive in Augusta.

The Richmond County Coroner's Office has identified the victim as Teresa McElderry. She was 53 and from the Evans/Augusta area. Investigators say she was homeless.

McElderry's family tells 26 News she was a loving person, who was the life of every party.

But they say she had recently fallen on hard times.

Workers at the Master's Table soup kitchen say McElderry has regularly come for meals for years. They say she was polite and kept to herself.

Investigators tell NBC Augusta 26 News someone flagged a deputy down to notify them after finding McElderry's body on a dirt road Friday morning.

The coroner tells 26 News she was killed sometime overnight. Investigators are trying to figure out whether she was killed at the location or if her body was brought there.

This is Richmond County's 20th homicide this year and there were 20 this time last year.
