AUGUSTA, Ga. - More than seven thousand miles away from home, one little girl is hoping a medical procedure will change her life!
The five-year-old and her family came all the way from the United Arab Emirates so she can have a sinus surgery, that's not offered in the Middle East.
“Amna was a child that I had met in the United Arab Emirates, but I knew I would never be able to intervene for her over there,” said Dr. Jack Borders.
Dr. Borders knew he would be able to reach out to Amna Almaskari at the MCGHealth Children's Medical Center in Augusta.
Amna's father, Talal, says she's struggled with a cough since she was born and they've traveled the world to find the right treatment.
“We went to many countries. We went to Thailand, England to find a cure for the coughing. But up until now, we haven't found anything,” said Talal Almaskari, Father.
Doctors say Amna has had trouble with her sinuses and her lungs. Although, they aren't able to pinpoint a diagnosis, they know fixing her sinuses will help reduce some of the problems.
“Her sinuses have continued to drain and aggravate her lungs in such a way that she would not get better without an aggressive approach with her sinuses,” said Borders.
It’s a procedure that wasn't available anywhere in the Middle East.
“The extent of her surgery to clean out her sinuses, the instruments were not available to make it safe in the Gulf area,” said Borders.
“I’m happy. I'm very happy we can come to the United States to get good treatment for our daughter,” said Almaskari.
Now that Amna has one problem taken care of, she's returning home to continue her treatment. She hopes recovery is just around the corner.
“That's why we go to medical school to help people who don't have access to medical care,” said Borders.
“I will send a message to my home country that you are good people. You all have made me feel welcome from customs to the hospital. It's good hospitality that I have found here,” said Almaskari.
Dr. Jack Borders also took a biopsy to see if the fine hairs in Amna's sinuses are functioning. Borders say she will continue therapy and he will see her again in November when he visits the United Arab Emirates.
