EVANS, Ga. - Health departments in Richmond and Columbia Counties started giving the first batch of the H1N1 Mist vaccine Monday.
Some parents couldn't wait for their children to get the vaccine, others still have reservations.
Medical professionals say there have been deaths in children ages 2-4 after getting the H1N1 virus.
Although there are some children who shouldn't get the vaccine, health experts say those who are able to get it, should.
Shawna Satterfield is one of many parents in Columbia County who made it top priority to get their child the H1N1 mist vaccine.
"I have several friends back home in Knoxville and their children have contracted H1N1 and so I definitely wanted to vaccinate my daughter," said Satterfield.
Unlike Satterfield, there are some parents who are on the fence about getting the H1N1 mist for their children.
Something that has parents hesitant is that it's a live virus.
But health experts insist the vaccine is safe.
"The risk of influenza including severe complications from influenza is a lot higher than any theoretical problem with the vaccine," said Anne Schuchat with Centers For Disease Control National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.
"Our pediatrician recommended it without reservation, so we were thrilled that it was finally available," said Satterfield.
Right now the H1N1 mist vaccine is available between the ages 2-4, they must not be allergic to eggs or have other severe allergies.
Children with asthma or certain muscle or nerve disorders should not get the H1N1 mist.
Although health professionals say the decision is ultimately up to parents, if your child meets the requirements, they recommend you get them vaccinated.
Columbia and Richmond Counties both still have H1N1 mist vaccinations left.
You can make an appointment or walk-in on certain days.
