AUGUSTA, Ga. - Georgia State Senator Ed Tarver is one step closer to being the next U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously voted for him.

The full Senate must vote on the confirmation before President Barack Obama signs off on the nomination.

"I'm excited about the opportunity. I'm going to enter it with a serous attitude and approach and I hope to live up to the expectation the president and other have placed in me," said Sen. Ed Tarver, Nominee.

Tarver is the first African-American to hold the position. He will be the top federal prosecutor for a district that covers 43 Georgia counties.

Tarver currently represents senate District 22, which covers Richmond County.

A special election will be held to fill Tarver's senate position.
