AUGUSTA, Ga. – Calls about a suspicious smell lead Richmond County investigators to a body in an abandoned car.

Now, deputies are trying to identify the man found in an east Augusta neighborbood.

Richmond County investigators responded to a home on Pollard Drive Sunday afternoon.

Investigator Charles Mulherin tells NBC Augusta 26 News the homeowner called 911 after he smelled something coming out of an abandoned Ford Explorer in his backyard.

Mulherin says the body is most likely that of a homeless man who was known by the homeowner.

He tells us no foul play is suspected, but investigators are working to positively identify the man.

Several people who live near the area tell 26 News they noticed an unusual odor in the area for a couple of days.

Mulherin says the man had been dead in the car for several days.
