AUGUSTA, Ga. – Thousands of people turned out in Richmond County to vote in the local election Tuesday.

NBC Augusta 26 News caught up with the winner of the Augusta-Richmond County District 3 Commission seat, Joe Bowles. He defeated challengers Joy Mitchell-Booker and Cleveland O’Steen with more than 80 percent of the votes.

Bowles says he was worried that there would be a very poor turnout, but he was surprised by all of the people that came out for him.

“I think it goes to show that people are sick of government intrusion in their lives and like lower taxes,” said Bowles. “With these tough times especially, lower taxes are a great thing and that’s what brings in industry.”

With another three years to lead Richmond County’s third district, Bowles had a few things he wanted to get done.

“In District 1, the TEE Center is something I would like to see resolved. In my district, the Belair Road expansion, other than that, I’m looking forward to having a good time.”
