LOUISVILLE, Ga. - A Jefferson County man is in jail accused of vehicular homicide.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says Friday night a deputy tried to stop a car that was driving erratically outside of Louisville. As the deputy approached the car the man driving, Miller Smith Jr., tried to exit then changed his mind and sped off.
The deputy chased the car until he lost sight of the vehicle approximately three minutes later on Middleground Road. Deputies continued to search the area and found the car overturned in the woods five miles outside of Louisville.
An adult male passenger was beside the car and said Smith ran from the scene. The passenger also told deputies there were two children inside the car.
Deputies found the two children on the ground nearby. Alike Smith, a two-year-old girl who deputies believe is Smith’s daughter, died at the scene. A 3-year-old boy was airlifted to the hospital in Augusta.
Deputies called the tracking dogs. They found Smith in a wooded area. After a brief struggle, Smith was arrested.
The passenger was released without being charged.
Smith is charged with several other crimes including reckless driving.
GBI will do an autopsy on Alike Smith. Right now the cause of her death is unknown.
