U.S. Preventive Services Task Force member talks about new mammogram guidelines

AUGUSTA, Ga. - A member of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is right here in Augusta and she's speaking out about new guidelines for breast cancer screenings that are causing heated debates.

MCG School of Nursing Dean Lucy Marion is one of 16 members who make up the task force.

Some doctors say the task force is giving misinformation to women stating that if you're between 40 and 49 years old, you should not be screened for breast cancer unless you're at high risk.

"One thing I would really like to make clear is that the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force did not reject 'no screening' in the 40s. What we recommended was it's time for the conversation with your health care provider and start talking about when to start the process," said Marion.

Doctors on both sides of the fence recommend always consulting your doctor before a mammogram at any age.
