AUGUSTA, Ga. - The girlfriend of the man shot and killed by Richmond County Sheriff's officers is speaking out. Three narcotics investigators shot Michael Nestor Tuesday night outside his home on Ohio Avenue in west Augusta. They say he almost ran over one of them.
"What they did was wrong. He may not have been doing the right things. But he loved me and his child more than anything in the world," said Lauren Baker, girlfriend.
Lauren Baker says her unborn daughter will never get a chance to know her father, Michael Nestor.
While trying to arrest Nestor on drug charges Tuesday night, Richmond County Narcotics investigators say they were forced to shoot him. Lauren was home when it happened.
"I saw three men walking in regular clothes and an officer in uniform. I looked over and I said honey they're coming to arrest you. He grabbed the keys and opened the car door," said Baker.
Strength says investigators didn't want to alert Nestor that they were going to arrest him, so they parked down the street and walked. He was sitting in his car. Officers say when they approached Nestor he put his car in reverse and they thought he was going to hit one of them. That's when all three officers fired their guns, shooting Nestor in the neck and arm.
"They are definitely trained like everybody that you can protect yourself and that's what they were doing," said Strength.
Lauren says she remembers something different.
"The car wasn't moving at all. There's no reason to shoot him. Before I heard the car crank up, I heard eight or nine shots," said Baker.
Richmond County investigators arrested Nester a month ago on drug charges. Lauren says that's when she found out he was dealing drugs.
"His big concern was that this was wrong and that he didn't want it to be this way. He said we shouldn't be with him. But he did what he knew how to do to make sure I was OK and his baby was OK," said Baker.
Lauren is expecting Nestor's child in two weeks. She says, although his life ended tragically, she wants her daughter to know the good things about her father.
Investigators tell 26 News, Nestor agreed to cooperate on other drug cases after they arrested him last month, so they let him go. But days later, they say Nestor didn't follow through so they issued a warrant for him.
