AUGUSTA, Ga. - A vicious animal attack has put two people in the hospital after a donkey escaped from his owner.

The donkey jumped over a fence and mauled an Augusta man on the other side.

The attack happened Thursday off Old Savannah Road in Augusta.

The man suffered several severe bites from the angry donkey named “Spike”.

One person who witnessed the attack says the man provoked the animal.

"I think it's a good donkey. I've been back in this guy's yard plenty of times and it's never bothered anybody,” said neighbor Malik Dillard. “My kids, a bunch of the neighbors; they’ve never had any problems. I don't see [the donkey] doing any damage or hurting anyone unless it was provoked, which is what I believe happened in this situation."

On Wednesday, a 16-year-old girl was taken to the hospital after being bitten in the back by Spike. The family says they’re not pressing charges.

One other person was bitten on the hand recently.

Neighbors say kids, teens, and even adults had thrown rocks at Spike and taunted the animal within the past weeks.

Animal Services took Spike back to their facility and charged the owner for having his livestock running loose.

The owner will have to wait until a court hearing to see if he can get Spike back.

The Richmond County deputy who responded, said in his 15 years with the Sheriff’s Office, this was the first donkey attack he’s ever heard of.

If the owner had been paying closer attention to his animal he would have seen the stupid people throwing rocks at it don't you think? Since one of the neighbers had witnessed it on a few occasions.

The people who tormented the donkey should be put in a chain link fence with the donkey and given a handful of gravel to throw at the donkey. May the best one walk away.

Jas, why should the owner loose Spike because of the actions of others? Should I take something from you just because other people have issues with it?? Really, what did the owner do? The donkey jumps a fence and attacks it attackers. If it was a human ten we would all be cheering and saying that it is about time someone stood up to these hooligans!

U agree, good for Spike, and the neighbors who taunted him should be arrested and the owner should press charges. Anyone who throws rocks at or otherwise torments an animal deserves to be bitten (and given jail time and sentence of community service cleaning the pens at the shelter.)

We have animals and neighborhood children have tormented them while we are at work. The result is the animals react in a negative way when strangers are around.

I hope the guys' bite get infected. And he;s charged with animal cruelty. What posesses people to do things like this to animals? What, you think you're so much better and you can get away with it? Well, the donkey sure thought otherwise! Good on Spike.

I don't understand why the owner was charged for letting his animal run loose, when the article says that Spike jumped the fence to 'attack the person'. I'm guessing he jumped out of his enclosure to bite the jerk taunting him.... that doesn't seem fair to me that the owner should be charged with that....Poor Spike.

Has anyone considered pressing charges against the people that were bitten. They were abusing the animal and they got what they deserved.
