AUGUSTA, Ga. – As the city of Augusta gets ready to break ground on the Kroc Center, a few builidings will be shut down and moved, one of those, the historic Broad Street Burger joint.
People lined up Saturday afternoon to say 'bye, bye' burger and hello Kroc Center.
The Broad Street Burger joint has been an institution in Augusta since the 1950's, now it's time to say good bye.
"I grew up on these things,” the son of the first owner of the building, Chris Mail said.
Mail said his father bought the place back in the '50s.
“The burgers were 100 % beef, Vidalia onions if they were in season, all 35 cents,” Mail said.
Almost 60 years later, the food cost a little more, but it's still cooked the old fashion way-- to order.
Saturday was the last day people could enjoy the cooked-to-order burgers on Broad Street.
Several buildings, including the burger joint, have closed to make room for an 85,000 square foot new community center.
The new community center, known as the Kroc Center, will include arts, education and recreational facilities as well as a social services center.
"I'm also happy because of the change,” current owner, Eduardo Bautista said.
Batista is glad about the progress, but doesn't want to say good bye to a piece of history.
"During our last few weeks people have been telling me all their sentiments and [asking] why it has to be this way?” Batista said.
Bautista plans to relocate his old fashion burger shop along Walton Way.
"They will be tasting the same old burger that they've been having their whole life,” Bautista said.
Even with change, good taste stays the same.
Bautista hopes to open the new burger joint by next year. The new place will feature pictures of the old building as well as its’ patrons.
