They promise to help tone your muscles, trim your thighs and even help you lose weight. This isn't an exercise program, but some popular walking shoes. But do they live up to those claims?

They're nearly impossible to keep on store shelves the new FitFlops. Designers claim after walking 30 minutes in a pair, you'll get trimmer thighs, legs and a better backside. They cost around $50 a pair.

But they aren't the only brand, now there are Crocs sandals.

“I've seen people in them every single day and you can't go anywhere without someone in a pair of Crocs,” said Stephanie Cott, Hibbett Sports, Assistant Store Manager.

The $35 sandal's circulation nubs promise to stimulate blood flow, making your feet feel like air whether you're on sand or cement. Buyer Katie Kameese is a believer.

“I probably wouldn't have bought them if I didn't try them on, but they are actually very comfy,” said Kameese.

Jessica Kirby, a certified Athletic Trainer with Doctors Hospital, says the shoes may be comfy but she added, “As far as I know there is not enough research to back that up.”

Kirby says when searching for the perfect walking shoes there are some things to keep in mind.

“You want something to bend where your foot naturally bends and you don't want something loose or floppy in the middle,” she said.

Kirby says a shoe like Asics may work for long walks. She says it's a lightweight shoe, with full support for the entire foot and has a sturdy sole.

“They're comfy and they fit to my foot,” she said.

Kirby also says make sure to try on walking shoes when your feet are in their natural form.

“At the end of the day is the best time to try on a shoe because that is when your foot is slightly swollen,” she said.

Though regular flip flops are a summer tradition you may want to toss them if you have foot problems. Kirby says they don't provide arch or ankle support.
