GQ: Is discounted meat quality meat?

By Tina Terry tterry@nbcaugusta.com

We've all seen them while shopping for meat! Manager's specials that slash the cost of beef, chicken and other meats in half.

But Nicole from Augusta wants to know if discounted meat has the same quality.

We spoke with Georgia's Department of Agriculture and they say all discounted meat has to be sold before the expiration date. And a spokesman from Richmond County's Health Department says even though discounted meat may look older it is not a lower quality than fresher meat.

"Even if hamburger looks a little bit grey, that is just because it has oxygenated. It doesn't mean it's really affecting the quality of the food," said Mike Allison of Richmond County's Sheriff's Department.

Manager's discounts are given at the discretion of the manager. A local Kroger store manager says they're usually given in the morning and sale quickly.

Good questions, Nicole! I always wondered that, too.
