AUGUSTA, Ga. - It could have a whole range of health benefits that could help us live longer and better.
More research comes out on green tea's benefits all the time and a lot of that science comes from here in Augusta at MCG.
"The anti-cancer, anti-oxidant power of green tea is well known, well studied," said Dr. Stephen Hsu. He says it all boils down to ECGC, and other antioxidants.
He'd know. He's one of the world's top Green Tea experts, though it wasn't always by choice.
"A lot of years ago I was forced to go to a farm in China and do hard labor," he remembered. "I have a lot of experience in green tea growing, picking and processing, so I developed some kind of link with green tea."
Hsu says that link kept steeping. He found green tea could help destroy cancer cells, even reduce wrinkles.
"To a certain degree it is true green tea could help to reduce wrinkles, protect our skin, cosmetic use, anti-aging," he said.
If you want the benefits of green tea now, you have other options besides just the drink.
Dr. Hsu has green tea gum and mints, green tea eye products, and coming soon: green tea anti-dandruff shampoo.
"People use anti-dandruff shampoo, loaded with coal tar. Coal tar has a lot of carcinogens, so we have developed a prototype for shampoo," Hsu said.
As more benefits came into sight, so did another researcher.
"When I was in Iraq I saw a patient with Sjogren's syndrome, he had dry mouth, dry eyes," recalled Dr. Kevin Gillespie. When he returned from combat, his research led him to Dr. Hsu and green tea -- and a surprising discovery.
"With time there was a decrease in the manifestation of diabetes in the mice," he said.
With signs Green Tea can help fight diabetes, cancer, even wrinkles and dandruff; does the fountain of youth come in a tea bag?
"It's not a miracle drug, or miracle drink. We're going to make sure we understand the benefits," Hsu said.
But it's clear, there are a lot of benefits, and Doctors Hsu and Gillespie have a lot more brewing.
Dr. Hsu says watch out: not everything labeled "green tea" has the health benefits.
He says the best bet is to avoid highly processed drinks and go for the stuff from the bag.
He says all his products do contain the helpful antioxidants. You can find the green tea gum, mints and much more at many area stores including Walgreens.
