AUGUSTA, Ga. - It is probably the most common resolution and that means it is also probably the most often broken.

So what's secret to getting, and staying fit?

"This year I want to get about 10 pounds off and keep my cholesterol down," said Jerry Mansfield.

He says he knows the key to his resolution is hitting the gym, and doing Cardio.

It is actually just a slight change of routine though. He already spends a lot of time at the gym after a resolution he is kept for years.

"When you get into a routine it's easy to come back in and work out," he said.

If it is your first time in the gym for a while, there are a lot of new machines and it can be overwhelming, but experts say the best thing to do is pace yourself.

"Start slowly and work your way up, start with lower reps and build up," said Elizabeth Lamb, the Director of Sports Medicine at Doctors Hospital.

She says there are plenty of ways to keep your resolution, even if you can not make it to the gym.

"Be creative, park at the end of the lot, take stairs. When you're at home watching TV do floor exercises," Lamb said.

She says whether you work out in the gym, or at home, the key is persistance. And who knows -- you might start to like it.

"I enjoy coming to the gym so it's not that hard. I come two or three times a week," said Mansfield.

Lamb says it is a good idea to set specific goals, and if you meet them, reward yourself.

Also, she says it is best to measure progress with a tape measure, not a scale. That is because muscle is denser than fat, so your weight might not reflect your progress.
