AP - State health officials say boiled peanuts likely caused an Upstate salmonella outbreak.
Two dozen people were sickened with salmonella in the Upstate. A spokesman with the state Department of Health and Environmental Control says the agency's never heard of salmonella in boiled peanuts before.
Spokesman Adam Myrick says the boiling would have killed any of the bacteria on the peanuts, but salmonella could have ended up back on the nuts during refrigeration, packaging or shipping.
DHEC says the boiled peanuts were sold at the mid October Pumpkin Festival in Pumpkintown in Pickens County. Everyone who got sick from the peanuts has recovered.
Myrick refused to name who sold the peanuts, but says DHEC officials have talked to the seller about how to handle food safely. The vendor won't be punished.
