The number of arrests in Operation Augusta Ink keeps growing. At least 71 people have been arrested. Many of those face federal charges and are in custody of the U.S. Marshal's office. The Richmond County Sheriff's Office and The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives raided several south Augusta homes arresting dozens and confiscating more than 400 guns and boxes full of illegal drugs Wednesday.

It was the fruit of a 16 month investigation. It all started in a Hephzibah tattoo parlor. Undercover investigators say they posed as employees interested in making illegal drug and gun purchases from gang members.

The bust also led to 71 arrests and officers are going after about two dozen more.

"We're going to do everything humanly possible to take these gangs off the streets," said Sheriff Ronnie Strength.

Investigators say those still on the streets are members of seven local street gangs from South Augusta. Many of them are based near the tattoo parlor.

For now, investigators say they are pleased with their success over the last year. They say every arrest and gun seized represents lives that were saved.
