Fake Million Dollar Bill Lands Man In Jail

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office arrested an Augusta man who tried to open a bank account with a counterfeit $1,000,000 bill.

Alexander D. Smith is charged with disorderly conduct and forgery.

Investigators say Smith gave the counterfeit bill to a teller at Regions Bank in Clearwater, South Carolina. The employee refused to accept the bill and called the sheriff's office.

Officers say Smith also purchased several cartons of cigarettes with a stolen check over the weekend.

The largest denomination of currency ever printed is the $100,000 bill. The bill was printed back in the 1930s.

I cannot believe that the bank tellers actually had to use a counterfeit marker on the bill to see if it was real. Who's the bigger idiot?

FYI it is Cheque not check. You "check" for spelling mistakes but you write a cheque. Who's the idiot...?

Hey Jeff, you'll notice that this happened here, and is being reported here, in the States. We spell it "check".

To be fair 'check' for 'cheque' is one of the least widespread 'American spellings.' Etymologically it's just as legitimate as 'cheque,' but on any other grounds the rest-of-world spelling is clearer. Sort of a metric system situation.

MuhMuh: Nowhere does it say that the bank tellers had to use a counterfit marker? People making fake currency often put a fake color that looks like a currency pen mark in hopes that someone will think "Oh, this bill has already been tested."
