A shopping mall in Omaha, Nebraska remains closed as police continue to investigate a shooting that left eight people and the gunman dead. News of that shooting spree has many wondering about security at the Augusta Mall.

NBC Augusta has learned the Augusta Mall and Westroads Mall in Omaha are owned by the same Chicago-based company, General Growth Properties. We put in several calls to their corporate office to see if security measures are the same at all their malls. But none of our calls were returned by our deadline.

As far as security at the Augusta Mall, we talked to a sergeant from the Richmond County Sheriff's office that helps with security at the mall. He says security guards are always visible in both the mall and its parking lots. He tells me the mall has a security plan in place to deal with emergencies like the one in Omaha and security surveillance cameras are all over the property both inside and out. Management from the Augusta Mall would not comment for our story.

But, General Growth Properties did release a statement about the shooting on their website stating the tragedy in Omaha, Nebraska, has been a horrific event for the entire community and their number one priority has been to ensure the safety and well-being of the shoppers and employees of the mall.

The statement goes on to say their deepest heartfelt sympathy and prayers go out to all the families of the victims.
