Little Carter Lawrence is less than a day old. He was born early Wednesday morning at 7 pounds, 13 ounces and 20 inches long.

"It was amazing. I'm still trying to grasp the reality that he's mine," said Nicole Lawrence, new mother.

Baby Carter and mom are doing well and getting to know each other.

They're also bucking a new trend in baby delivery. Nicole delivered Carter by vaginal birth.

"It's more natural obviously and I think there's more risk involved with a C-section," said Lawrence.

"I do have concerns about the increasing number of cesareans because it has implications for these women," said Dr. Andrew Helfgott.

Dr. Helfgott blames the increase on a new breed of mothers, he's coined it the 'now generation.'

"They want what they want when they want it. They want to be able to plan their delivery. They want to have the baby on a day that's convenient for them," said Dr. Helfgott.

Is that 'now' mentality leading to more deaths? Figures released by the National Center for Health Statistics show an increase in pregnancy related deaths. There were 13 deaths per 100,000 in 2003 and 14 deaths per 100,000 in 2004.

"I don't see a direct correlation between the increase in cesarean sections and the increase in the number of women dying during child birth. For me, I think the safest route to go is vaginal delivery and I think the data supports that," said Dr. Helfgott.

Dr. Helfgott says he strongly recommends families sit down and discuss the pros and cons before deciding on a c-section.
