Monday's cold weather didn't stop thousands from attending King Day at the Dome in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The annual event in Columbia, South Carolina, brought out a call for change and this year along with three Democratic presidential candidates.

"I had to be hopeful to be standing here today. I didn't come from a lot of money. I didn't come from power or privilege," Sen. Barack Obama said.

All three of us are on the journey with you. On the march of equality, Justice and fairness," John Edwards said.

“We can not afford to wait any longer. It's time to stand up, speak out and vote," Sen. Hillary Clinton said.

Two separate campaigns converged on the front steps of the Capitol building on Dr. King's birthday… the presidential race and the Confederate flag flying on Statehouse grounds.

"You wouldn't burn the American flag would you? My ancestors fought for this so why would I do the same thing?," Matt Jamison said.

"It's appalling and it should have been taken down so long ago," Mary Bowden said.

On what would have been Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 79th birthday, more than 6,000 people rallied in support and remembrance of the civil rights leader. And like years past, calls for the removal of the Confederate flag from Statehouse grounds emanated throughout the air.

"There were two people hung weekly for more than 30-years because of that flag," Leon James said.

Across the street, supporters of the flag voiced their opinion.

"This flag is a symbol of the liberty and freedom for the people fighting for the principals of Thomas Jefferson and John C. Calhoun," John Cobin said.

The NAACP continues its economic boycott in South Carolina.

In 2000, the confederate flag was removed from atop the Capitol building and placed outside the Statehouse beside a Confederate soldiers monument.

Sal wrote ..."So many whites died for the emancipation of the blacks" Not in the War of 1861-1865 they didn't! Those 300,000 died for the same reason that British and Hessian soldiers died in the War of 1776-1781: to cram big government down our throats.

Proud Southerner: the south is the only entity ever to have lost a battle and still insist on flying the *losing* party's flag! What about the Battle of Little Big Horn I guess the US Flag should not be flown because they have lost Battles. People fly Tribal Flags, Battle Flags, Military Flags and should be allowed to fly what they want too.The Rebel Flag is part of our Heritage. We fly it with Pride. We have enough respect to fly the US Flag after what they did to us.Leave our Flags alone

WE AS A COUNTRY HAVE WAY TOO MUCH OTHER IMPORTANT THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT, THE WAR OUR MEN AND WOMEN DYING OVERSEAS, CHILDREN BEING MURDRERED (THROWN OFF BRIDGES) STARVING, AND DYING ELDERLY DUE TO NO MONEY FOR FOOD OR MEDICINE!! PEOPLE LOOSING THEIR HOUSES, PLEASE PEOPLE IT WAS AND I SAY WAS A PART OF OUR HISTORY.MOVE ON WITH TODAY AND TRY TO LEARN FROM IT. I AM A VERY TRUE BELIEVER IN FLYING THE FLAG, NOT ONLY DID WHITES DIE IN THAT WAR ALSO BLACKS THEY SHOULD ALSO BE PROUD TO FLY IT!!!

Mr. PROUD SOUTHERNER, obviously you need a history lesson. The reason "true" southerners want to keep this flag is because their ancestors fought and died defending their homeland from a northern agressor. This is one of the flags they carried. You need to read and educate yourself. The CW was not fought over slavery. It was fought over money. Just like all wars. This flag doesn't mean slavery. It means BRAVERY. The NAACP doesn't want to rid our country of racism, they ARE the racists.

If the conferderate flag doesn't stand for something hateful and racist, why doesn't the US flag suffice as the positive and historical? the south is the only entity ever to have lost a battle and still insist on flying the *losing* party's flag! it's ridiculous and only serves to offend and enrage. the naacp, while they may not be my cup of tea, are working toward the good of the country as a whole, to rid our nation of racism/prejudice. there is a high-ranking WHITE offical working for them.

The NCCAP are trouble makers and if they don't stop trying to destroy our history, they will get trouble.

It's funny how us people up here in the North, who had relatives killed by the people of the South who were carrying that flag into battle against them, really harbor no ill feelings for that flag but look at it as a part of our History. We do not protest the flag since we realize it is part of our History. So many whites died for the emancipation of the blacks and we dont have any i'll feelings over that. Why does the NAACP always have to make an issue over these things when we who died dont

How very sad that some Americans cannot leave history be, feeling the need to either re-write it or forget it. We can, and will, never forget our Southern ancestors who died for "God and country," most of whom did not own slaves. The battle flag is the last flag these brave men saw before committing to die. It should wave proudly to honor them, and I believe fines should be imposed on those who would desecrate it's true value for use as a symbol of hate which, by God, it is not!

YOU DO THE MATH!! Our US flag flew for 89 years 1776-1865 over a country that constitutionally protected slavery. The Confederate Flag, which by the way, never flew over any state, was only around for 4 years. Now, which FLAG is a symbol of slavery?? YOU DO THE MATH!!! Next, the NAACP will want to take away all US Flags. The Civil War was fought over money, not slavery. The southern states didn't have to leave the union to keep her slaves...They were tired of paying the tarriffs.

The NAACP has again proved that it is an irrelevant organization that is only interested in stirring up racial hatred and violence. They are a disgrace to this country and if they really believed in freedom, they would have no problem with anyone flying any flag anywhere or anytime.

The NAACP in its attempt to destroy Southern Heritage is destroying American Heritage as well. They are far more devisive than the Confederate Flag has ever been. They are renewing racial hatred instead of eliminating it. WAKE UP!

By Law, as stated in the United States Statutes at Large, Confederate soldiers are American Veterans who deserve all the rights and honors of all American veterans. The removal of this flag by the monument, due to pressure of the NAACP, would certainly deny these soldiers from S.C. the rights and honors they deserve by law.

When the flag was removed from the dome of the Capital, it was done so in a COMPROMISE between the South Carolina Legislature and the NAACP. Now that the flag flies at the Confederate monument, the NAACP is still not satisfied, therefore, they're not living up to their part of the COMPROMISE. Aren't there more important issues for the NAACP to be concerned about?

Since science has determined that there is only one coloring pigment in skin, we must ask the question, who is the NAACP today, and what do they really do for a living?

It's a shame that the NAACP can't find something positive to do!

Just goes to show once again how irrevalent and hate filled the NAACP has become since winning Civil Rights. If South Carolina would simply boycott the NAACP, then they would dry up and blow away

Monday, Jan 21 at 3:32 PM CITIZEN OF US wrote ...

WHY CAN'T THE NAACP LEAVE IT ALONE? THEY ARE ASKING FOR HISTORY TO BE CHANGED AND THAT IS A BIT MUCH CONSIDERING IT WOULD ONLY GIVE THEM NOTIONS TO HAVE OTHER HISTORIC THINGS CHANGED. CHANGING THE FLAG IS NOT GOING TO CHANGE HISTORY, SO WHY CHANGE THE FLAG THAT REPRESENTS A PART OF EVERYONES HERITAGE, WHETHER THAY AGREE WITH HOW IT USED TO BE OR NOT.
