UPDATE: Richmond County Deputy Coroner Arrested For Stealing; Investigators Searching For More Victims

By NBCAugusta Reporters

A former Richmond County Deputy Coroner has been arrested and fired. Charlena Graham is accused of stealing from the body of a dead woman. Investigators say other families have contacted them about missing items from their deceased loves ones.

"In the 30 years I have been here, I have never known anything like this to occur in the corner's office," said Grover Tuten, Richmond County Chief Coroner.

Tuten answered questions and defended the integrity of his office.

"We have what we think to be honest and capable people and we put our trust in them," said Tuten.

Tuten's response came after deputies arrested 43-year-old Charlena Graham. She's charged with stealing and using hundreds of dollars in gift cards.

"We will always clean our own house. We will not tolerate that kind of conduct from any employee," said Tuten.

Graham retrieved the body of the deceased woman from a West Augusta hotel, December 31.

Richmond County investigators say between January 1 and the 20, Graham used several of the gift cards at several local retailers.

"The cards were numbered. The family was able to give us numbers on some of the cards that they identified and we were able to track it in that matter," said Capt. John Francisco, Richmond County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say they've already fielded several calls that could lead to more victims. In the meantime, Tuten says he can't understand why his employee would steal from the dead.

"I hired her and put her in a position of trust and she betrayed me and betrayed the citizens of Richmond County,” said Tuten.

Graham allowed the deputies inside her home. They say they found some of the items that were purchased with the stolen gift cards.

Sad in Augusta, do me a favor and get real. You obviously live in a shell somewhere if you think this lady is some kind of exception. The point is that typically when a minority is placed in high profile job because a quota must be met, you don't get the calibur employee you would get if the only consideration was employee quality. There r just as many great black employees as whites, But because of this rule even if the white is a better choice, the black gets the job. Maybe your right, SAD!

Someone tell me why does it have to be black adn white, it's plain ignorance Ms Grahams part,. Has nothing to do with her skin color, grow up people!!! It's sad when a family is trying to grieve thier loss and has to put up with this kind of mess. America is full of thieves in all colors, states, and finical situations. My only concern is justice is served and the family can move past this and have some closeure and grieve in private and peace!!

To Brown Skin: You make a good point. This does more harm to black women in authority than anyone else. I acknowledge there was a need to level the playing field years ago, I just think a lot has changed since affirmative action was enacted. Good luck on your job, and I hope your hard work is appreciated by the people you work for.

I am an AMERICAN female with brown skin who feels that I don't want a job based on my skin color or my sex. All Afirmative action did was Make White America hire different skin tones. It didn't prove we desereved to be there. I've been on my job seven years and everyday I work hard b/c I know I can be replaced by a good ol'boy in a second. Unfortunately people like Ms. graham do make it hard for those like me but, she made that mistake, not me.

Coat Note, she was a deputy, then an investigator and with Internal Affairs before she transferred to the Coroner's office because she also had other qualifications. You are right. Anyone that worked with her, supervised or mentored her must be horrified. Coroner Tuten was devastated. He trusted her. She betrayed his and the public's trust.

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!! Otherwise, you would admit that under normal circumstances, people like Mrs. Graham would have been weeded out long ago. Instead, R.C.S.O. finds people they (think) they can control and they groom them for these high profile jobs. Violent crimes is FULL of supervisiors that were promoted simply because they can be easily controlled. Until people are promoted on merit and not how effective the Jedi Mind Trick can be used on them, these problems will continue.

I'm afraid I agree^. Anytime your color or your gender opens a door for you, the potential for this type of stuff exisits. Who you are as a person should write your ticket for you, not what color you face is, or what kind of junk you pack. I THINK this woman was in Internal Affairs for the Sheriff's Office for a while. Nice..real nice.
