One person is dead after being hit by an Augusta Public Transit Bus Monday morning.

The bus was making a left turn onto 15th Street from Laney Walker Boulevard when it hit pedestrian Ji Cheng.

The bus driver says he had the green turning arrow and didn't see Cheng.

Ji was headed east on Laney Walker toward the Medical College of Georgia.

She was a first year graduate student at MCG studying biomedical science. She was originally from China, but lived in student housing on campus.

Some people who walk through that intersection for work and class say it is not safe.

Speeding and illegal turns are two complaints.

Augusta traffic engineers say they just added new pedestrian crosswalks to the intersection, but walkers say more should be done.

City leaders say in the past four years there have been seven pedestrian accidents at that intersection, but they say those numbers are low for such a high traffic area.

I changed the way I get to work because of this intersection, too many pedestrians walking into the crosswalk when I had the left turn arrow, I was afraid of someone walking in front of me and getting hit. This is a tragic accident and should be a lesson to drivers to watch where they are going and pedestrians to follow the walk/don't walk signs. When I worked at MCG I never crossed at this intersection. I agree with the previous comment, it was safer to cross closer to Walton Way on 15th

I noticed the chang of traffic light this morning. The light for going straight won't turn green until the left turn arrow turns red for 0.5-1 sec. Thanks for this change. For this reason, I am asking the question: Is it possible that Ji had a walk light for pedstrians and she started to run while the bus turned left quickly with the yellow left arrow? In this case, it will be difficult for them saw each other. Thus, the accident happened.

the main problem at MCG is the parking, MCG administration should look into finding property on campus to add on to the parking decks so the employees don't have to cross the street, I worked at MCG for 26 years and have been retired there for 8 years, there has always been a parking problems for the past 30 years they build and don't realize where the employees are going to park there has been parking lots availble but they are being torn up to make buildings

Its very hard to look back over your shoulder and watch for turning cars and stuff in the cross walk. Much safer to jaywalk down street where it is much more open and you can see cars coming and going.

I have seen a bus made left turn as high speed while the light turned green for me to go straight. This morning I noticed that the left turn arrow is yellow while the light for going straight has just turned green. It seems the light design in that part is also not very well. I think there should have cameras in the traffic lights around MCG because a lot cars don't care pedestrians and go through red lights and don't stop for pedstrians in the stop sign

Even in the story you can see someone crossing the street against the light for pedestrians and anyone who drives along that road will notice a variety of jay-walkers. It's horribly sad that this young lady died and it should be a wake-up call to both bad drivers and pigheaded pedestrians alike.
