A Richmond County inmate accused of murder is dead.

Willie Casey, was found dead in his cell Monday afternoon. Casey and a 12-year-old boy are accused of killing a man inside his Augusta home last week.

Investigators say Casey is believed to have hanged himself around 1:08 p.m. Monday. Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength says guards had just checked on Casey at 1:00 p.m., just eight minutes before another inmate found Casey hanging in his cell.

A medical team responded immediately. The sheriff says Casey was not on suicide watch and there were no notes left behind.

Casey and the 12-year-old boy are accused of shooting and killing Roosevelt Cowins during a home invasion on Fenwick Street last week.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking in to the death.
