If you think a fresh Cobb salad sounds like a perfectly healthy way to stay fit, you may want to change your order.
A fried onion, bacon burger, pizza and salad. It’s thousands and thousands of calories, 8,900 to be exact. And if you think you know what you're eating, think again.
We took the food to the cafeteria at Doctors Hospital. Guess after guess, our volunteers had no idea just how many calories the artery cloggers have in them.
"It's very scary especially with obesity in America and heart disease in America," Anette Repko said.
Scary when you consider this large meat pizza with a cheese filled crust has 520 calories per-slice. That's more than 4,100 calories for the entire pizza.
"I love pizza, but it's scary," Kathy Henderson said.
Keep in mind, the average person should have between 1,500 and 2,000 calories a day.
Eating a fired onion will surpass that number for sure. It has 2,710 calories and yes, that includes the dipping sauce.
"Probably artery clogging," Repko said.
If fast food burgers are your fancy, try a double patty with bacon and cheese for 840 calories.
But the biggest surprise of them all was a Cobb Salad with 970 calories. That does not include the dressing.
"It is really deceiving people because you see the vegetables and from that you think you're making a healthy choice," Henderson said.
Nutritionist Samantha Ellefson says she’s concerned by the high calorie count seen in today's foods. But knowing what you're eating can make all the difference for a healthier tomorrow.
"Just knowing how much fat and how many calories, subconsciously you might make a better choice,” she said.
Ellefson, a dietitian at Doctors Hospital, tells NBC Augusta if you have to eat fast food, try to get a grilled chicken without cheese and bacon.
At a restaurant, she recommends eating anything that's grilled instead of fried foods. And watch out for those high calorie creamy salad dressings, substitute them with a vinaigrette.
