Dozens of stray dogs are roaming the streets in Burke County and there's no animal shelter to take them in.

Rosemarie and David Angeletti found a stray dog on their porch just days ago. The dog was malnourished, wreaked of odor, and had worms. The dog had to be put to sleep.

The Angelettis say dog owners need to be more responsible.

"The county could open some sort of a shelter to help people who live out here," said David Angeletti.

The Angelettis say they've already taken in four stray dogs that have wandered into their yard.

Richmond County leaders wouldn't talk on camera, but many of them say the tax base in Burke County just isn't large enough to support an animal shelter. One county commissioner says an animal shelter could cost about as much as it does to keep deputies on the road there.

I love animals. Recently saved 2 pups from living in a 6ft deep hole eating month old deer meat. However, Burke is rural, very, very rural. We will be over run will strays once we say we'll take care of Richmond, Jefferson, Screven animals. We currently have to deal with truckloads of old tires that are dumped off here from those counties. Dogs will be worse. 12 in a pack killed 40 chickens of mine. I now have 2 saved pups. No shelter. More arrests for abandonment.

WONDERFUL story and reporting! The light needs to shine on the neglect on the part of Burke County in dealing with this horrible problem. There is no excuse for what is happening to these poor dogs. There are many resources but they still refuse to deal with the problem. Please keep on it and keep doing such a wonderful job. We are the only voices these poor animals have and they don't deserve what is happening. And thank you for showing that there are good, caring people out there helping

Many people have been asking Burke Cty Commissioners for years to have animal control and a cruelty officer to no avail. Cruelty calls are ignored no matter the severity. Petitions have been signed(over 1000),pictures of beaten, malnourished animals were shown, outcry in their local papers is repeatedly ongoing, TV coverage, and a child was attacked and almost killed by a stray Pit Bull that was hungry -still no response. STRAYS ARE EVERYWHERE dying! Their excuse is they say they have no money.

Excellent......its about time somebody stood up for the defenseless animals that have no other options when they are kicked out on the curb because people are to friggin usless to take responsibility for them. People like the Angelettis are the epitimy of what a great nurturing family is all about. Hopefully more like them will stand behind the Angelettis and do whats right by theses animals and find a way to punish those that do things like those shown in this video..
